Intro. to Programming I – Registration

Spring 2015

On-site classes taught by a volunteer parent are open to 3-rd-to-6th graders PCR students. In 3 months we touch most of what a 1st year college student in Computer Science learns in the first few weeks of “CS-101”, i.e., functions, variables, conditionals, loops and recursion. The class is taught using the Python language. For more information, please see the class description.

Unless your child has had some previous exposure to programming, it is normal and expected for most elementary-school kids to have to take this class more than one time to finish it. This is specially true if the child does not work on his/her own at home.

This term, for the first time, we will have an experienced student – Adam Kakuk – teaching the class; Adam has taken all the computer classes that I have taught at PCR plus he was a teaching assistant of Intro I in the spring. I (Andres Castano) will be in the class at all moments, assisting him, as well as another parent volunteer, and at least one additional advanced student. The idea is that eventually this class will be taught by advanced students without requiring my presence.

Class Information

  • Place: PCR Media Center (old computer lab)
  • Time: Tuesdays, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
  • Duration: 14 sessions, from 9/1/15 to 12/8/15

Registration requests a spot but does not guarantee it nor it binds you to your request. Spots are not given on a first-come first-served basis; instead, we cap the class at about 20-25 children, strive to have an equal gender representation, and give priority to children in 3rd and 4th grades.
